Why I became an acupuncturist

I had my first acupuncture treatment in 1994, shortly before moving to Bristol. The treatment was for a shoulder problem that I’d had for many years. Around that time, I’d decided to finally do something about it, and tried various conventional treatments, which had no effect. Someone suggested acupuncture, so I went for a treatment. During my first treatment, I found the experience profound. The acupuncturist used only a small number of fine needles at a few locations on my body (none of them near my shoulder) and I became aware of a powerful force being released from deep within me. For some years, I had felt that my energy was low and I’d assumed that it was part of getting old (I was then only in my early thirties). But on the day after my first acupuncture treatment, I felt that I had the energy of a nineteen year old again. I also felt like a different person; I felt that I’d been brought back to life in some indefinable way.

I completed the course of treatments, and I found that my life from that moment onwards had been transformed. Not only was my health transformed, but I also found that miraculous coincidences started happening to me. It seemed that I was now more in touch with my own body and also with ‘nature’ (or ‘the universe’—call it what you will), and I found that all the things I needed in life started to miraculously appear, in the form of perfect job offers, perfect accommodation, and perfect opportunities in every other aspect of life. Whatever my exact needs were, it seemed that the universe conspired to channel the solution my way.

Since that first course of acupuncture treatments, I have religiously pursued my interest in working with this ‘energetic force’ that flows through all our bodies (and also seems to connect all living things), the force that acupuncture utilises to heal us on every level, physical, mental and emotional.

After moving to Bristol in 1996, I went through various other transformations, and finally the time seemed right for me to start training in acupuncture. I didn’t hesitate; I took the opportunity, and at every moment since starting my own practice, it has seemed that I am now doing what I was intended to do.
